PrintLims Lims development LIMS system Harmonized reporting templates
Eleven thematic spreadheets (with several worksheets in them) are provided for reporting Livestock statistics and Information at Member state level and at regional level (SADC). They are organized into Components and Modules with their related Statistical Templates. The system is modular, scalable, the workload can be divided, and it is collaborative by nature.
The LIMS statistical reporting templates (worksheets organized in spreadsheets) harmonized for the SADC region describe the contents and the type of information (“contentware ”) that should be collected at country level before being transferred to the SADC secretariat, Livestock Unit of FANR.
The templates are organized into eleven (11) independent modules, representing the first "core" dimensions and essential elements of the regional LIMS. Each template describes one content; made of thematic and quantitative data, reflecting one aspect of the livestock sector. Data should be collated in Member States who will be using such information to guide their livestock policies and eventually shall be sent to the SADC secretariat.
Some field questionnaires have been derived from the templates using the same contents (the minimum data set). They will be used by enumerators and extension services, in order to facilitate the collection of relevant information in combination with various electronic devices and technologies (e.g. the digital pen technology DPT, is tested in a collaborative project between the SADC PRINT project, the African development bank funded TAD’s project (Strengthening institutions for risk management of transboundary animal diseases) and the FAO sub regional office of the Regional Animal Health Centre in Gaborone).
The set of reporting templates (i.e. Excel data sheets) is provided in this page. This set represents an illustration of the contents which should be accessible in the national and regional livestock statistics within the SADC region. National statistics can go beyond this minimum data set though.
The customization of such data sheets can easily be done at national level using national logos or insignas, like in the example displayed in this page (Customization for Botswana) and the attached file (based on one module only, the LIMS Module 1 on livestock census)
Interoperability with External Data Capture Devices (DPT Digital Pen Technology) or External Databases
Besides, and in order to allow interoperability with external sources of data, the LIMS software has been designed with a function ready to import "external data" . A selection of data can be queried from various national databases (external sources), provided that the result of such a query is formatted in a specific way and therefore compliant with the "LIMS import format ".
The following training note provides for explaining the general features and the various steps to be followed to use the interoperability function of LIMS . This note should be carefull read, particularly in view of using LIMS in relation with the Digital Pen Technology , a data capture device tested in five SADC countries: Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania. The SADC TAD's project funded by the African Development Bank is responsible for the follow up and the implementation of the DPT in the five countries in collaboration with the FAO (Regional Center for Animal Health) .
To import data into LIMS one should firstly prepare data using the following Excel Files (with several tabs) which are specifically formatted. Therefore they represent the Importing Templates to be used with the import function of LIMS. The files accessible here are adapted to the current LIMS version ver 2.04.

The LIMS system uses the HS harmonized system used internationally as the major standard to categorize products traded between countries, including LLP Livestock (alive) and Livestock Products . The categories can be described with various levels of details (HS2, HS4, HS6 etc..).
A full description of the HS system is here:
The LIMS software offers to select only some categories of the HS listing.
1. Live Animals / Animal vivo / Animaux vivants
2. L. stock Products / Producto animais / Produits d’élevage
3. L. stock Inputs / Inputs / Intrants de l’élevage
